WTCC: DECISIVE MEETING BETWEEN SEAT DRIVERS FOR DRIVERS' CROWN IN MACAU

DECISIVE MEETING BETWEEN SEAT DRIVERS FOR DRIVERS' CROWN IN MACAU
13 November 2008

As has been the case every year, the traditional Grand Prix – run for the 55th time this year – will decide on who will be the new WTCC Champion, although this year only two drivers; Yvan Muller (right) and Gabriele Tarquini, are still in a position to claim the top honour in the Drivers' title.

Rickard Rydell (SEAT Sport)

After winning the WTCC Manufacturers’ Championship at the penultimate WTCC race held in Japan, SEAT Sport is going into the last season meeting with two team drivers vying for the championship title, and third place in the general standings is also at stake.

Muller, Tarquini and Rickard Rydell (left) could achieve a historic hat-trick for SEAT in the WTCC.

SEAT drivers will not be liable to the team’s orders in recognition of the excellent work carried out throughout the entire season. However, the team’s objective is to consolidate Rydell’s third place and wind up the championship with the best possible result in order to celebrate the successful performance of the León.

The three SEAT drivers and their rivals from Chevrolet and BMW will be racing with the maximum ballast load of 70 kg, while Jordi Gené and Tiago Monteiro’s Leóns will be a little lighter.

Tom Coronel’s (right) León WTCC will be weighed down with 65 kg due to his spectacular victory in Japan, which gave SEAT the wins with both petrol and diesel engine versions.

Robert Huff (Chevrolet)

The battle for the runner-up spot will also grab everybody’s attention at the Guia Circuit, with four drivers – amongst whom Chevrolet Racing's Rob Huff (left) – capable of achieving that goal.

An extra unknown is added to the debates by the fact that for the first time all irregular WTCC participants will have to run with the maximum ballast of 70 kilograms.

Thus almost half of the 30 starters will be running heavy cars, which means that the fight for position will be tough in the middle of the field. But with some of the regular contenders – like Chevrolet’s Alain Menu and Nicola Larini – running light, the Macau races could also produce some of the most exciting racing of the season.

With Rob Huff looking to secure the runner up spot in the WTCC, team mate Alain Menu (right) looks to repeating his last year’s win and Larini trying to score that elusive first win, one thing is for sure: the Lacettis will most likely finish its last WTCC race on a high.

BMW national teams can no longer challenge for the WTCC Championship, but history shows that BMW usually goes well at the famous street circuit, despite suffering a difficult season: six out of the eight touring car races held at Guia since 2004 have been won by BMW drivers.

Jorg Muller (BMW Team Germany)
Andy Priaulx (BMW Team UK)

No fewer than 15 drivers will line up for the two sprint races with a handicap weight of 70 kilograms. These include BMW Team UK’s Andy Priaulx (above) and the BMW Team Germany drivers, Jörg Müller (left) and Augusto Farfus.

Each of these three drivers can still move up to third in the Drivers' standings. Félix Porteiro (below left) and Alessandro Zanardi (below right) race for BMW Team Italy-Spain with 51 and 32 kilograms of ballast respectively.

For N. Technology, James Thompson (right) will be joined by regular guest André Couto for the final race of the season.

The Italian team, which has secured seven top ten finishes so far this season with the Honda Accord Euro R Super 2000 and Thompson, including a win and third place in Imola, is hoping to end the season on a high note with the help of Macau-expert Couto.

James Thompson (N. Technology)

This weekend marks N.Technology’s 18th year in touring car racing, the outfit began competing in 1991, and driver James Thompson is hoping to give his team something to celebrate.
