|At the penultimate round 11 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Earl Bamber grabbed his very first PCCA Championship on the back of a pole to flag victory at the Shanghai International Circuit. Bamber, on his way to a sixth win of the year, also posted the fastest lap of the 12-lap race at the Formula 1 track, beating title rivals Alexandre Imperatori and Martin Ragginger.|
With a round left to run at the awesome Guia Circuit, this year’s PCCA is pretty much done and dusted. Bamber’s victory at Shanghai gave him an unassailable lead of 21 points at the top of the drivers’ standings from Ragginger. Meantime, Rodolfo Avila sealed third in the standings, having finished sixth in the penultimate race.
As the lights went out for the penultimate race, the PCCA Class A contenders pushed off the grid with Bamber storming ahead from pole, but Ragginger mounted a spirited challenge on Imperatori. Imperatori and Ragginger were side-by-side through the first few turns. The Shanghai-based Swiss driver held firm though, with Barker getting by Ragginger to go third after the first lap.
Japanese PCCA driver Keita Sawa spun, coming together with Chinese driver Jason Zhang Zhiqiang, the pair retiring from the race as a result. Others who were unlucky at round 11 were Bamber’s team mate Adrian Henry D’Silva and Wayne Shen. the racer from Hong Kong.
Earl Bamber scores sixth PCCA win and secure title with a race to spare
Up front, Bamber headed Imperatori at the head of the order and just behind them, Ragginger was diving to the left and the right behind Barker, his frustration palpable as he tried to force the Briton into making a mistake. Barker held firm though until the final lap when the determined Ragginger charged past. The Austrian’s final lap dash ensured the final podium spot, but didn’t do much to prevent Bamber from securing the drivers’ crown. The New Zealander’s 21-point advantage was enough to land him the 2013 PCCA drivers’ champion trophy.
For Bamber, it was a dream come true to take the championship in just his first season of the PCCA. The Youngster echoed, “It’s absolutely amazing. The start of the season was quite difficult, finding sponsorship and everything. Our goal was to be in the top three and it has been a huge team effort. It’s fantastic to bring the title home with one race to spare.”
The finale is scheduled for the Macau Grand Prix from 9 – 10 November.
