After overnight heavy rain, skies were overcast all day. Temperatures were 11°C this morning, rising to 19°C by the afternoon. The final leg of this classic event consisted of four asphalt stages split into two loops of two with central service in the port of Ajaccio. The surfaces gradually dried out after heavy overnight rain, but the treacherous corners and constantly varying grip provided an awesome challenge right up to the end.

SOLBERG BOUNDS FOR A FOURTH VICTORY IN A ROW

After claiming a hat-trick of wins on the last three rounds of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship, the Subaru World Rally Team will travel to Corsica next week for the 14th of the 16-event series, the French Tour de Corse. Starting on Friday 15 October, the rally will be the first asphalt event since August’s Rallye Deutschland and the first of two consecutive Mediterranean sealed-surface events.

Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills took victory on Rally Italia Sardinia today to claim their third consecutive WRC win. Leading the event from the outset, the pair were fastest on 13 of the rally’s 19 stages and finished 2 minutes 7.9 seconds ahead of second placed Sebastien Loeb.

So it proved for Team PSP, with Watson Smith having to open the race weekend from the back of the grid after overheating problems in qualifying. The WRC continues to break with tradition and, coming immediately after a Rally GB organised in summer, the calendar turns to yet another brand new round in October, the Rallye d’ Italia, in Sardinia. Harri Rovanperä, who came 6th in Wales, has previous experience of the Italian event after winning it last year prior to its inclusion in the World Championship, although the actual route was very different twelve months ago. The Finn will be out for a top result on the Mediterranean island, as will Marcus Grönholm who will be looking to obtain the sort of success that has escaped him in recent outings. Read more

Weather: Following early morning light showers, conditions cleared and were mostly dry for the remainder of the day. Temperatures started at 12°C in the morning, rising to 17°C by midday. Stages were loose gravel with some mud and damp patches.
