F1 Canadian GP: Vettel jumps right back into Championship lead with fantastic win

Sebastien Vettel has won th 2018 Formula One Canadian Grand Prix with a royal flush from rivals Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen. Vettel’s win ended a 14-year drought for Ferrari at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

With the win, Vettel is now back in the lead of the Drivers standings, ahead of title rival Lewis Hamilton, who only managed a fifth place finish. Team mate Kimi Raikkonen was sixth.

Starting from pole, the Ferrari ace got away well from the hard charging Bottas and Verstappen. Raikkonen lost a position to Hamilton in a straight fight to the first corner. A collision between Brandon Hartley and Lance Stroll called out the safety car, which circulated for four laps.

After the re-start, Vettel quickly got comfortable and lapped under the 1:16, the only driver to do so. Ferrari had opted for a one-stopper, which meant a clear run to the flag for Vettel thereafter. The only obstacle for Vettel was backmarkers, which he cleared round the 30-lap mark.

By the third-quarter of the race, Vettel had a 6-second leed from Bottas. When Bottas pitted on lap 37, Ferrari called Vettel in for tyres. A quick work in the pitlane saw Vettel back out in front in a hurry. Afterwards, it was a clear run to the flag. Behind Vettel, Bottas had to fend off a hard-charging Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo came home fourth, in front of Hamilton who defended his position from Raikkonen. Completing the top ten were two Renaults Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon for Force India and Charles Leclerc for Sauber.

After the race, a jubilant Vettel said, ”This win is very important for our tifosi and for our team, today is a special day. 40 years ago Gilles won here, then 14 years ago it was Michael and I was thinking of that today. At the start I tried to build up a margin, I was happy with my first lap and then the safety car came out and I had to start over again. During my last 10 laps I prayed that my car would not develop a problem until the end! Points are always important but today this win means a lot and not just in terms of Championship.”
