In looks, the 7th-Gen Sonata’s Fluidic Sculpture design takes cues from nature to generate a certain dynamic beauty. In a nutshell, the new Sonata is best expressed through its refined character lines and the body’s curved forms.
Dynamic character is redefined with the 7th-generation Hyundai Sonata
Gifted with Bi-Xenon HID lights (Auto leveling for the Executive version) and the outstanding DRLs, the new Sonata has a 3-D front grille to bring out Hyundai’s bold statement for a large sedan, as well as the unique combination lights, which compliments the rear’s scuplted curves. LED rear foglights and muffler, along with 18-inch wheels amplify the car’s dynamic character. Additionally, a smart trunk system gives easy access to the 462-liter boot and opens in 3 seconds, with just the smart key in tact. The Elegance B and Elegance versions get standard 17-inch wheels, while the Executive version receives 18-inch wheels.
In dimensions, the new Hyundai Sonata is 35 mm longer than its predecessor at 4,855 mm. This means more leg room for the occupants. Aside from that, the car’s 30 mm wider than the previous edition at 1,865 mm. Overall height is 1,475 mm, while wheelbase measures up to 2,805 mm, with short front and rear overhangs measuring 965 mm and 1,085 mm, respectively.
Refinements are carried to the inside of the new Sonata, with the T-shaped dashboard and panoramic sunroof taking center stage upon entry. Major interior highlights include 3.5-inch or 4.2-inch LED Supervision Cluster, illuminated in white, 12-way adjustable seats, Electronic Chromic mirror, Safe Drive Recorder and AVN unit (Audio Visual Navigation); available for the Elegance and Executive versions. The AVN hub is powered by an Android 4.4.2 operating system that is accessible via the touchscreen display panel. However, the base Sonata is offered with basic Radio, CD and MP3 head unit to keep costs low. Occupants would be happy to note that the Silent Door Sound is in place to eliminate excess noise when opening and closing doors and windows.
The new Hyundai Sonata is powered by a Nu 2.0 MPi powerplant for a max output of 154PS at 6,200 rpm and 194 Nm of torque between 4,000 – 6,200 rpm. The re-designed engine room and enhanced suspension play a part in an effective aero. coefficient drag of 0.27; best in the D-segment. When paired to the Customary Auto Cruise Control, 6-speed automatic transmission, Drive Mode Control and Amplitude Selective Damper, the new Sonata is indeed a car where the driving experience comes first.
Passive safety features are aplenty for the new Sonata, including 51% AHSS (Advanced high-strength steel), improved structural rigidity (41% greater torsional strength and 35% greater bending strength than the outgoing Sonata), and newly designed underpinnings for the suspension. Hyundai proudly proclaims that the new Sonata has been tested at the most challenging circuit of the world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Active safety features consist of 6 airbags (Elegance and Executive), ABS, ESC, HAC (Hill-start Assist) and Active Cornering Light (Executive only).
