|Jorge Lorenzo topped the qualifiers at the Circuit de Catalunya, Round 7 of the Championship. Lorenzo sprinted to pole, just six hundredth of a second ahead of Marc Marquez, who topped the first qualifying.|
Marquez battled with an unexpected rider LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami in the first qualifiers and came out tops with a quickest time of 1:39.217. Nakagami. meanwhile, made it into Q2 for the first time ever. The reason Marquez had to go through Q1 was because he had a late crash in FP3 a day earlier, which put him out of an automatic Q2 spot. The second Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso qualified third to share the front row with his team mate and Marquez.
In the final shootout for pole, Lorenzo, who will join Marquez in Repsol Honda camp next season, quickly established himself at the forefront. Although Dovizioso came close in his final run for pole, but lost time in a sector to end up third.
Maverick Vinales finished fourth. ahead of Suzuki’s Andrea Iannone, with the second Yamaha of Valentino Rossi. The Pramac Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci was sixth fastest, only three hundredth down on Iannone’s lap time. In turn, Iannone who was quickest in FP4 was just 0.003 behind Viñales’ time and is set to start from the second row for a third consecutive race.
Rossi ran second for the first two runs before dipping down the grid order in the final run. The bottom rung of the qualifiers, eighth through tenth. featured Johann Zarco for Yamaha Tech 3, Tito Rabat for Avintia and Cal Crutchlow for LCR. Crutchlow had a disappointing end to the session, crashing at the newly modified Turn 13 while on a personal best lap.
