Marquez takes 77th career victory at Misano

Reigning Champion Marc Marquez took a convincing win at the San Marino Grand Prix from Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Vinales. Prior to the race, both Repsol Hondas of Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo topped the final practice session.

The defending champion had a less-than-superb start to slot in third behind Quartararo and Vinales. Vinales lost the lead to fellow Yamaha rider on the opening lap. It didn’t take long for him to squeeze past Vinales on lap 4 to go after the Satellite Yamaha rider next.

Quartararo led for a time until Marquez cut his lead down lap after lap.  Vinales hung tight in third, being pursued by team mate Valentino Rossi.

In the closing laps, Vinales had closed up to less than a second to the lead riders. With the two leading men occupied with their own battle, the number-12 rider was riding on the limit. He came under 0.8s behind Quartararo but wasn’t able to put in a move.

The start of the last lap saw Marquez’s machine roar past Quartararo heading into Turn 1, the pair briefly sparring before Marquez made the move stick later in the lap. He topped Quartararo with a gap of 0.903s, Viñales took the chequered flag in third place, 1.636s from the front.

Marquez returned to the top step of the podium after back-to-back second place finishes. The win moves him 93 points clear of title Ducati rival Andrea Dovizioso, who finished sixth. There are six races to go. With the win, Marquez became  the fourth most successful rider in Grand Prix history.

Fourth was Rossi who struggled through the race. The Doctor moved up a spot on lap 6 and came up fifth a lap later when he overtook Pol Espargaro. It took a while before he was able to earn fourth place. He held Franco Morbidelli at bay in the closting stages and took fourth at the line.

Behind Morbidelli was Dovizioso, the championship runner-up. Seveth through tenth finishers were P.Espargaro, Joan Mir, Jack Miller and Ducati factory rider Danilo Petrucci.

The MotoGP teams and riders move to Spain for the Aragón Grand Prix, scheduled to take place next weekend at the MotorLand Aragón circuit.
