|The first Formula One testing of the year has concluded at the Circuit de Catalunya with Kimi Raikkonen topping Daniil Kvyat on the fourth and final day. Raikkonen finished the day with the best lap of 1:23.477, over 79 laps.|
The Finn completed his program on setup, tyre compound tests and long runs. He tested on the available tyre compounds and deemed that testings do not refer to actual races. “We have a new car here and there is always something to try, to test. So it is necessary to check everything. Testing time is painful, but it is better to do checks beforehand than having big problems during the Championship,” Raikko commented. “I don’t know if this is going to be a good car, no one can tell, but it seems to be a good car even if there are still many things to try out. We don’t look at what the other teams do, we do our stuff and get ready.”
Finishing behind Raikkonen and Kvyat was Force India’s rookie Alfonso Cells, who topped a more experiencd Kevin Magnussen, the new Renault F1 driver. Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen and Sauber’s Felipe Nasr were fifth and sixth, with 1:25.393 and 1:26.053 lap times.
The Reigning Champion Lewis Hamilton and team mate Nico Rosberg took up eighth and seventh spot on the concluding day of pre-season test. Hamilton took the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz F1 W07 Hybrid in the first half and Rosberg then assumed the drive in the second. The defending champion completed 99 laps before the break, while Rosberg did a further 86 laps. The team’s program centered on aero evaluation and race simulation work, including practice starts and pit stops. In all, the Mercedes AMG F1 team completed a total of 1,699 km.
Felipe Massa managed to squeeze his Williams in ninth overall, just ahead of Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez. Meanwhile, a certain Rio Haryanto in a Manor Racing car took up eleventh spot, ahead of Fernando Alonso’s McLaren MP4-31. Alonso’s day was disrupted by the car’s mechanical issue from the previous day. Following a hydraulic issue, the car’s engine had to be replaced prior to the final day’s program. After three installation laps, the telemetry data showed a small, unrelated coolant leak, which meant the car needed to be completely stripped down in order to perform the necessary checks. Unfortunately, the nature of the issue meant the fix took the majority of the second half of the day to complete, and the team elected to end the day’s running early in order to ensure the issue was properly investigated and rectified.
Despite the curtailed running, the first pre-season test has been largely positive, and has enabled a sizeable amount of valuable integration, evaluation and correlation of our new package’s components.
The teams now prepare for the second pre-season test session in the following week at the Catalan track.
