|Suzuki Malaysia Automobile (SMA) today revealed the Grand Vitara mid-sized SUV in a refreshed guise. The Suzuki Grand Vitara has always been depicted as a rugged, yet refined Sports Utility Vehicle that’s capable of both on-road and off-road experience.|
The Grand Vitara continues Suzuki’s 40-plus year history of building compact, rugged SUVs. Key to the Grand Vitara’s go-anywhere capability is its unibody construction with integrated ladder frame, rugged RWD architecture and four-wheel independent suspension that’s normally reserved for more premium SUVs.
For 2012, the Grand Vitara carries over its stylish exterior and interior trimmings from the previous edition, as well as its fuel-efficient DOHC four-cylinder engine and adequate safety features. The Grand Vitara maintains its classic SUV posture with an aggressive stance, short (and off-road friendly, only available with the 4X4 variant) front and rear overhangs. Updated exterior trimmings include front bumper with wave-lined chrome grille, 17-inch 10-spoke wheels and a new Gaia Bronze Pearl Metallic color. The updated front bumper’s under garnish utilizes SSPP (Suzuki Super Polypropylene); a new material that is lighter and provides better color than conventional materials.
The cabin space inside the Grand Vitara matches that of sedan cars, although new seat fabric and door inserts come standard for the refreshed edition. In addition, rear seat occupants get three-point ELR seatbelts for safety purposes. To top it off, the Automatic transmission (AT) is enhanced to include a shift-gate configuration, plus SMA has also reworked the gear ratios for better acceleration, smoother gear changes and an easier operation.
Powered by a 2,0L J20A-typed engine and 4-speed AT powertrain, the Grand Vitara has the capability to churn 138 horsepower or 103kW at 6,000 rpm and 183 Nm of torque. For chassis setup, front MacPherson struts with coil spring and the rear’s Multi-link form the suspension configuration, whilst the SUV’s stopping power relies on front and rear ventilated disc.
The Grand Vitara is loaded with a host of updated safety features, primarily the Brake Override System. The BOS mechanism enables drivers to halt the vehicle if the accelerator pedal becomes stuck. The throttle-override technology effectively stops the vehicle when the brake and accelerator pedal are depressed at the same time. Regular safety features carried forward include; dual airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution EBD and Brake Assist.
SMA is confident that the refreshed Grand Vitara will continue the previous variant’s success. The updated Grand Vitara is offered in five colors: Bluish Black 3, Metallic Quasar Grey, Pearl White, Silky Silver and the new Gaia Bronze Pearl Metallic. The 2012 Grand Vitara is available at a reasonable price of RM 121,100 on-the-road with insurance, including Suzuki Assist Program: 24-hr road assistance, vehicle breakdown and accident assistance, lifestyle and concierge arrangements, home assist service and claims approval.
