Marquez captures 8th title with emphatic Win at Buriram

The second ever Thai Grand Prix at the Buriram track saw Reigning Champion Marc Marquez pull a last lap stunner to score the win and capture the Riders’ title for the 8th time. Championship rival Ducati’s front man Andrea Dovizioso only managed fourth, which means the title goes to Marquez with four races left to run.

At the start, Marquez stayed close to the pole sitter Fabio Quartararo. Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales was also in the mix early in the race. It would soon be Quartararo and Marquez going one-on-one with the Yamaha rider for the win, from the mid-distance onwards. Everyone else settled in their rhythm.

The final laps were explosive as the 2019 MotoGP Champion launched an all out assault on the young Satellite Yamaha  rider, moving ahead as the last lap began. But it would go down to the final corner, Marquez expertly defending from Quartararo in the last corner to take the win and ultimately, the title. With 325 points, nine wins, 14 podiums, nine poles and 10 fastest laps, Marquez is the undisputed King in the Premier class; his sixth title with Repsol Honda and 8th overall. The victory is also Honda’s 150th in the MotoGP class, an achievement no other manufacturer has been able to match.

Vinales took third to salvage some decent points for the factory Yamaha, while Dovizioso could not make an impression and settle for fourth till race end. Alex Rins was the best Suzuki finisher in fifth, followed by Franco Morbidelli and Joan Mir.

Big names on the grid Valentino Rossi finished eighth, ahead of Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci and Japanese rider T. Nakagami.

The next Grand Prix moves to Japan from 18 – 20 October.  The remaining races  on the calendar include Australia, Malaysia and Valencia.
