Yamaha MotoGP unveils 2020 Challenger at Pre-season test in Sepang

Yamaha MotoGP Team have unveiled their 2020 Challenger at the official pre-season testing site in Sepang. As the year before, the rider line-up remains 9-time Champion Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales.

The 2020 Yamaha YZR-M1’s color scheme remains the same as the previous year, with the team’s YZR-M1, the pit box, and the riders’ leathers sporting the title sponsor’s ‘Monster Energy black’-to-‘Yamaha Factory Racing blue’ gradient. The M1 also features subtle blue stripes that add a further dynamic to the sleek design. The perfect blend between Yamaha’s aesthetic and Monster Energy’s instantly recognizable claw branding is also represented in the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team logo and the team gear.

Yamaha MotoGP riders are eager to get back on track after a mediocre last season. Vinales was third overall in 2019, while Rossi was seventh in the final rankings. Vinales faired better than Rossi with additional two wins. Fan favorite Rossi is a longtime rider at Yamaha, since 2004, before he jumped to Ducati for a brief time. He returned to the factory Yamaha squad in 2013. This season marks his 13th season with factory Yamaha. With Yamaha, the Doctor has attained four titles in 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009. Every fan can bet he’ll be as competitive as ever in 2020, but will he be able to upstage his younger rivals?

“At the end of last season we were in decent shape, so I‘m really excited to start working again on our goal to get the title and as many wins as possible. For sure, I‘m looking forward to riding my M1 again. I‘ve used the winter months really well. I‘ve done a lot of physical training and riding to make sure my body and mind are in top shape. We need to work hard and be focused on our goal right from the start, so that‘s exactly what we‘ll do!” Vinales commented.

Rossi added, “It‘s time to get serious about 2020. I‘m very curious to see what steps we can make during the Sepang Test. For sure, Yamaha have prepared some new things for us to try, and anyway the first laps of the year on a MotoGP bike after the winter break are always a unique sensation. For sure we have a lot of work ahead of us, but the team and I are ready for it.”

Former Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo has returned to the squad, where he won 5 titles. He is the test rider and has clocked first kilometers on the YZR-M1 in the shakedown test held on 2-4 February, after a three-year interval with Ducati. He completed his first test with satisfactory results, and his vast riding experience is expected to be a huge asset to Yamaha’s engineers over the course of year.

Ladies, Are ya up for a challenge of driving a Race Car?

Join the Proton R3 Lady Search and Mentor programs

Ladies if you like to try out a new challenge, here’s one that might be of interest – the Team Proton R3 Lady Search and Mentor program. The program is initiated by the National carmakers to encourage more females to dabble in domestic-sanctioned racing. The selected all-girls team will compete in the S1K (1,000 kilometers) endurance race at Sepang Circuit in a Proton R3 racer. Furthermore, the selected teams are bound to participate in the domestic race series (Malaysia Speed Festival) by Proton.

The Lady search and mentor programs are in partnership with MSF, the largest grassroots motorsports event in the country. Both programs aim to develop motorsports at a grassroots level by leveraging on R3’s experience built up over years of competition.

The Proton R3 program has been around for 15 years and garnered quite a number of accolades including the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), Production WRC, the defunct Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) and Sepang 1000km (S1K). Now, the time is right to appease the girls to join the Lady Racers Search and incumbents to partake in the  MSF-R3 Mentor Program. The aim is simple, to evoke aspiring racers and teams to participate in the programs with an opportunity to  elevate the incumbents’ performance and eventual success at national level events. It is also an opportunity to discover talented lady racers and nurture their careers, giving them a good head start in a male dominated scene.

Aspiring ladies into motorsports isn’t a new thing in this country as many top names in the game have ventured in it. A famous domestic lady racer, Leona Chin, motorsport athlete and girl drifter, came from such a program in the past, by Red Bull Drivers search..

Proton R3’s Lady seatch and Mentor programs

From an initial pool of participants, three will be offered an opportunity to develop as racing drivers and participate in the 2019 edition of the S1K race, driving a Team Proton R3 prepared car. Selections will be based on how contestants perform in a series of on and off-track activities and will include being judged on criteria such as discipline, team work and commitment aside from their skill behind the wheel.

As for the mentor program, selected drivers and teams competing in the MSF SuperTurismo races using Proton vehicles will be supported by Team Proton R3 personnel for the remaining three events this year. Though each team will be independently run managed, R3 will provide technical and set-up know-how before and during the race, with the specific aim to improve their performance and inculcate best industry practices
