Prior to the race, championship runner-up Fernando Alonso had said that only Sebastian Vettel’s retirement would swing the Drivers’ championship to his favor, otherwise his chances were rather small. It proved the Spanish Ferrari driver’s instinct was spot on…as Vettel survived a near-miss incident and two safety car periods to end up sixth for his 3rd successive F1 crown. Alonso, on the other hand, took up second behind Button in the race, with team mate Felipe Massa finishing third.

Silverstone and owners back Red Bull Racing and Vettel at season’s finale

Vettel back in the hunt after F1 Singapore GP victory

Third victory of the season for Hamilton at Monza

Sauber’s Sergio Perez equaled his best place finish in an F1 race by finishing second and current Championship leader Fernando Alonso took a favorable third place. With championship rivals Jenson Button, Red Bull Racing duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber all failing to finish, Hamilton is able to climb to second place in the drivers’ standings, 37 points behind the leader.

F1: Button storms to first pole since 2009 Monaco GP
