Vettel pounds the Gilles Villeneuve track for pole

The Formula One Canadian Grand Prix qualifiers saw four-time Sebastien Vettel snatch pole from rival Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slotted in third place, ahead of title contender Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel got the best out of it in qualifying and his effort resulted in pole number 217 for Ferrari, the 4th in the season so far. “Pole position is always important and for Ferrari this track and this country means a lot, as this is the place where Gilles Villeneuve came from. That’s why I am very happy to have qualified on pole. It’s a great result for all the team, but I think I could have been even faster. I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the car for the first part of the lap. So I tried it all but I wasn’t sure until the end if it was enough,” remarked Vettel.

Bottas was second, with his tenth front row start in F1. He felt he had everything out of the car in qualifying, but just couldn’t catch a faster Vettel. “It’s a good result, although it’s not perfect to start behind the Ferrari, but we knew that they would bring some improvements for this weekend. Red Bull will also be a threat, but it’s cool to see three teams fighting for the win. We’r e happy that we qualified on the UltraSoft tyre in Q2, I think it’s the right choice for our car. It will be interesting to see how it does in the start of the race, especially because Red Bull will start on the HyperSoft.”

Monaco GP winner Daniel RIcciardo finished sixth, behind the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen. Raikkonen had a good qualifying position in the cards, but a small mistake on his very last run cost the Finn dear and he had to settle for fifth place.

Behind the Red Bull were two Renaults and a couple of Force Indias, led by Nico Hulkenberg, then Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainx and Sergio Perez.
