O'YOUNG SHOWS RESURGENCE AFTER VICTORY IN ZHUHAI

Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion Team Jebsen's Darryl O’Young took an emphatic victory in Round 6 at the Zhuhai International Circuit last month. The victory proved to be his resurgence in the Championship which he dominated last season.
GruppeM Racing’s Tim Sugden crossed the line second, thereby strengthening his position at the top of the leaderboard. Team StarChase’s Christian Menzel drove a superb race to finish on the podium having started from the fourth row of the grid after his retirement with mechanical problems in Round 5.
Pole-sitter and winner of Round 5, Asia Racing Team’s Rodolfo Avila, ended his race in the gravel after dramatically spinning out while running 4th, although he did have the satisfaction of setting the fastest lap of the race.
Sugden made a blinding start off the line, stealing the march on pole man Avila and grabbing the lead, while the hard-charging O’Young moved up to second. Incredibly, Menzel was already up to 4th from 8th on the grid almost immediately. The four leaders had the crowds on their feet, as O’Young looked for a way past
Sugden, and Menzel eyed Avila, half a second separating each of the four.
At the start of lap six of the 12 lap race, O’Young made his move and grabbed the lead from Sugden. Avila then tried an ambitious move on the GruppeM Racing driver, brushing the front of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car and allowing Menzel to get by the pair to storm into 2nd. Seconds later Avila locked up under braking, and spun off the track, ending what had been a brilliant weekend for the young Macau racer.
Out front, O’Young set about increasing his lead, pulling out a gap of 4.437 seconds by the flag, as Sugden closed in on Menzel behind. On lap 10, he made his move and the pair put on a superb display of clean, professional racing as they jousted for position, with the Briton holding the line.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be back in action next month at Indonesia’s Sentul International Circuit on 14 - 16 August.
