The New Accord 2.0 VTi-L variant introduced in the third quarter of 2009 was aptly themed the "Perfectionist" to highlight the vehicle’s performance, sophistication and luxury factors in a distinguished manner.

The "Perfectionist" sentiment is a testimonial to the VTi-L grade which shares similar resemblance with the current 2.0VTi version. Along with its defined presentation and latest color, the Taffeta White, the 2.0VTi-L has been marked up in terms of key factors and overall exterior motives.

The Accord’s illustrious history spans more than 30 years, having grown into a global car status with a legacy of awards and innovations. The new 2.0 VTi-L is in the category of the 8th Generation Accord with additional styling and further dynamic features to deliver a marketability statement.

Its exterior contour differs somewhat to the current 2.0 VTi model, but intrinsically the exterior does provide a sharper and bolder outlook. At the front, an immediate noticeable element is its forward-thrusting shape, a singular large grille and well-defined headlights which add the typical aggression and dynamism of the overall front end purpose.

Interior wise, the 2.0 VTi-L provides exceptionally roomier and larger space for driver, front and rear passengers alike. Additionally, it does fit five or six comfortably on pristine leather seats and other well-defined interior amenities.

As with the 2.4 and 3.5 versions, the 2.0VTi-L’s cabin dimension includes a 3.2% increase; a 40mm expansion of the distance between driver and front passenger; and a significant increase in rear knee space and leg room at the rear. Overall, the cabin room within the 2.0VTi-L is still one of the roomiest among cars of its class, including those of continental makes.

Looking under the hood, the new Accord 2.0VTi-L’s 4 Cylinder, 16 Valve SOHC i-VTEC powerplant is expected to churn up to 156 (115)/6300 PS(kW)/rpm with a torque capability of 189(19.3)/4300 Nm (kg-m)/rpm. With this adequate power on the road along with its Shift Hold Control (SHC) transmission system and double wishbone front and multilink rear suspensions, this latest Accord variant does get you going places in a hurry. All these attributes culminate to an absolute comfort and blissful driving experience. With enhanced handling, a smaller turning radius and significantly reduced gear shifting, this variant takes a bend with relative ease without the usual slide or tyre screeching.

The Safety package of the 2.0VTi-L is most evident with an array of dynamic systems such as the Vehicle Stability Control (VSA), front active headrests, lap belt pretensioner, 2-step load limiting force control and pretensioner ELR, and most importantly, the G-Con (G-Force Control Technology).

It is of utmost value at Honda to ensure that these safety aspects are included in all of their production cars. The 2.0 VTi-L is loaded with one of the World’s most advanced body structure or Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) chassis which is incorporated from the G-Con. The G-Con is designed to spread out and disperse front collision impact over a larger surface, so as to limit cabin intrusion to effectively minimize driver and passengers injuries.

After a recent test drive courtesy of Honda Malaysia, we were satisfied with the new Accord 2.0VTi-L’s balance of performance and sheer driving bliss. The overall exterior appeal was most obvious with its well defined front grille and very articulate headlamps. The rear did not sway too much away from the other variants in terms of interface and appeal. From the sides, the 2.0VTi-L gives an aerodynamically savvy characterization.

Its interior also presented an inviting ambience especially in the driver’s cockpit with its classy centre console. The centre console houses air-con vents, dual air-cond temperature controls, a premium audio system and an emergency signal switch.

The rear passengers were more than satisfied with the comfort level of this variant, profoundly on a longer journey, thanks to good air circulation and other available amenities.

Our driving routine took us mostly on trunk roads and fewer on highways as we soon discovered that driving the 2.0VTi-L on the freeway was a total bore. Therefore, we preferred the trunk roads rather than highways due to the car’s unquestionable stability and proclaimed handling abilities. On freeways, you’ll hardly be able to even get a slightest glitch with the 2.0VTi-L as the vehicle is such that it is so comfortable that you could literally fall asleep while driving.

Cruising at 160 to 200km/h felt like floating on air, which of course is attributed to the car’s relatively acceptable power output and torque capability.

Performance-wise, this variant held its own ground, offering smooth acceleration on stop-go and call to overtake situations. On ascending and tight roads, the car had no real issue negotiating bends, corners and challenging intersections with the VSA turned on.

Even on numerous potholes around the city, the drive became a walk in the park and almost unfelt due to the car’s impeccable and precise suspension system.

Fuel efficiency was pertinent with the 2.0VTi-L on an average of 12km per litre on city driving. However, drivers would find this variant to be rather fuel economical on long distance drives

In a nutshell, the 2.0VTi-L does live up to its claim of a balanced vehicle based on its four affluent concepts – performance, comfort, superior safety standards and fuel efficiency.

The new Accord 2.0 VTi-L is available in a special Taffeta White edition and priced at RM149,800.
