In preparation for the 2010 Formula BMW Pacific series, the Petronas MOFAZ Racing team’s four young drivers resumed their Formula BMW tests at the Sepang Circuit yesterday. The test began with all four drivers; Calvin Wong (above), Natasha Seatter, Ryan Ritchie and Abang Amirrul Hadi, going out on four-lap cycles in an effort to determine the best setup for each individual driver.

The quartet took the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with formula cars following two intense months of familiarization training with skid cars. With the exception of Wong who had graduated from the PETRONAS Formula Xperience (PFX) program in 2008 and is returning for his second year in the Formula BMW Pacific series; 2009 PFX graduates SeatterRitchie and Amirrul Hadi will be making their debut as rookies in the 2010 series.

Wong, of course, were the quickest of the four, securing a fastest lap time of 2’ 13.00”, while Seatter (above), Amirrul Hadi and Ritchie were able to bring their lap times considerably down to the 2’16” mark after several key adjustments were done to their cars.

The test session was also used to assess the drivers’ individual capabilities as well as to gauge their technical and physical abilities. On hand to observe the drivers’ technical capabilities throughout the test session was experienced driver-coach Paul Spooner. Also present at the test was the team’s physical trainer Nick Kitchen who used his vast experience in Formula One to develop individual physical training programs for the drivers.

The crew will continue improving times with new tyres and technical adjustments in the last couple of days of testing. Then, they will head to two further
test sessions in the following week to prepare for the first race of the Formula BMW Pacific series from 1 – 4 April 2010 at Sepang International Circuit, as one of the support races of the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix.
