Five thousand five hundred people were treated to spectacular drifting action in the heart of the city centre – the F1 Pit Building, on the first day of the Formula DRIFT Singapore 2010 Powered by Nissan. Forty-two drivers participated in the qualifying round on Saturday, with the field cut down to the top 29 drivers who will compete in tomorrow’s main competition.

The day’s proceedings started with a practice session for the drivers, who had the
chance to test the highly technical track layout for the first time. With tight corners and tricky clipping points, the drivers were aware that their abilities and mettle would be given a real test at the third edition of the event in Singapore.
Each driver was given two runs on the track and the best score of either run was used to decide their qualifying position. Judged on their speed, style and ability to maintain the best drift angle possible, it was Japanese Champion and Top Formula DRIFT USA Pro Ryuji Miki who topped the standings with a flawless yet aggressive drive, with a score of 85.3.
Miki, who was the Champion in 2008, will try to get the Formula Drift Singapore title from Tengku Djan Ley, the defending champion of the event last year. “I am confident to do well on raceday, especially after my qualifying session. However, I must admit that with the other drivers performing at a higher level this year, it will not be easy. The most important thing for me will be to control my car well on the track,” said Miki.
Countryman Atsushi Murata of Japan and Tengku Djan Ley were placed second and third respectively. These three drivers have been given an automatic bye and automatically qualify for the top 16. Of the local drivers, Ivan Lim, Jansen Tan, Felix Lim and Jason Tan are among the qualifiers.

Sunday’s program will see 26 drivers battle it out in the main competition from 11am
to 12.30pm, followed be the Round of 16 at 2.30pm. The final four drivers from that round will then contest the podium places and the Formula Drift Singapore 2010 Championship.
