Volkswagen Group Malaysia has unleashed the much anticipated “R” line vehicles for the Malaysian market. Two of Volkswagen’s most popular variants in Malaysia, the Golf and the Passat CC are now available in the R-Line specification. The R-Line designates the Golf and Passat CC with a sportier exterior, individuality, yet retaining the two variants’ driving dynamics and impressive technical specifications. The R-Line and its vehicles range are made world-renowned, thanks to Volkswagen’s one-make race series: the Scirocco R-Cup, and soon the Polo R WRC in the World Rally Championship in 2013.

In addition, the “R” line vehicles, developed by Volkswagen R GmbH, incorporate technologies attained from the race tracks and transferred into current road cars. The Golf “R” and Passat CC “R” inherit intelligent-downsized TSI engines and the familiar DSG transmission which translate to better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

The Golf Is the next variant in VW’s repertoire to take up the R-Line status, after the scintillating Scirocco.  The Golf R gets an upgraded exterior, interior and a fairly able powertrain.

From the exterior, the car has three intakes in the front bumper area; an LED strip is integrated as a daytime running light in each of the two outer intakes. Aside from the LED daytime running lights, the front’s standard features include the famous R-emblem, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and LED rear lights. On its sides, the Golf R is identified by its side sill extensions in body color and mirror housings painted in high gloss black. The diffuser at the bottom of the bumper, central exhausts and large spoiler are main highlights at the rear. The “Talladega” alloy wheels with 235/35 R19 tyres and black brake callipers distinguish the Golf R from its nearest rivals.

Inside, the car takes up bucket seats, resembling a track car. The sport seats with crystal micro-fibre inner surfaces is made of “Vienna” leather and stitched with"R" logos. Also standard on board is an automatic climate control system (“Climatronic”) and the “RNS 510” satellite navigation system with 8-speaker audio system (DYNAUDIO 'Excite' 300W). Additionally, the Golf R comes with electric tilt/slide glass sunroof.

Under the hood, a 2.0-liter petrol direct-injection engine with turbocharging (TSI), mated to a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), propels the car to an output of 255 PS and 330Nm of torque. The car dashes from 0 – 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, while reaching a top speed of 250km/h. Consumption and emissions have been reduced quite drastically thanks to the engine’s intelligent downsizing; fuel consumption is down 13.4 % compared to the previous edition, a 3.2l version, and emissions is rated at 196g/km.

As standard equipment, the Golf R transfers the TSI’s power to the road via the latest Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Equivalent of a performance car, the Golf R now incorporates a sport chassis with Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) and lowered ride-height, as well as re-tuned springs, dampers and stabilizers.

The brake system, modified for the Golf R’s high level of driving performance, comprises a tuned set-up, ventilated discs all around and R-specific brake callipers in high-gloss black with the "R" emblem. Further to that, the electronic stabilization program (ESP) has been tweaked to delay intervention during fast and curve-filled drives, thus enabling a more responsive handling.

The Passat CC R-Line has been provided a thorough make-over on the inside and out. In fact, the standard Passat CC already commands the envy of many on-lookers; now the R-Line Passat CC will get greater attention with its even sleeker, more defined contoured lines. The car is further epitomized by the 18-inch ‘Mallory’ wheels, panoramic tilting glass roof and the R badge on the front fenders and rear of the car. Slight touches to the body give the car a low and sportier stance, thereby further accentuating the already attractive silhouette. Additionally, the car comes with the bi-xenon headlamps, electronically-controlled side mirrors and bending lights.

The Passat CC R-Line comes equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 power plant that produces 300PS at 6,600rpm and a maximum torque of 350Nm between 2,400 and 5,300rpm. Zero to a century mark is attained in just 5.6 seconds, while top speed reaches 250km/h, like the Golf R. The powertrain includes a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) that distributes the power and torque to the wheels via a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Fuel and emissions ratings are a respectable 9.3 litres/100km and 215g/km respectively.

Interior-wise, the R-Line treatment is further enhanced with the aluminium front scuff plates with the R insignia, sports seats finished in ‘Nappa’ leather, a flat-bottomed multi-function, leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel, brushed aluminium decorative inserts and the auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror.

There is no compromise on comfort too as the car is equipped with the ‘Climatronic’ air-conditioning system with dual-zone temperature control, DYNAUDIO 600-Watt ‘Confidence’ premium sound system complemented by 10 speakers, KESSY keyless entry and starting system, electronic parking brake with hill hold and auto hold functions, Park Distance Control with ‘Rear Assist’ reverse camera and the RNS510 touch screen radio with integrated satellite navigation system.

Safety equipment include airbags for the driver and front passenger, and curtain and side airbags for rear seat occupants, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), ABS and EBD, Traction Control system and ISOFIX seat fixtures for kids at the rear.

The CC R-Line driving characteristics have been updated to include the Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) for a better performance, whilst assuring a composed and sure-shot ride and handling.

The Golf R, retailing at RM268,888, is presented in 6 color choices: Candy White, Tornado Red, Rising Blue, Reflex Silver, United Grey, and Deep Black, whereas the CC R-Line, priced at RM373,888, has 9 color options: Urano Grey, Candy White, Night Blue, Reflex Silver, Light Brown, Iron Grey, Deep Black, Mocca Anthracite and Icelandic Grey.
