Motor Image today did an official rollout of the anticipated Subaru XV Crossover at the Tan Chong Motors Assemblies (TCMA) plant in Segambut, KL. The XV Crossover becomes the very first Subaru variant to be manufactured in the country. This milestone is a step towards the Japanese marque's objectives of expanding its presence in the Asian region and becoming a major player in the domestic automotive scene.

The Completely Knocked-Down XV is meant for the three South East Asian countries - Indonesia where the XV debut in early October, Thailand and Malaysia. More than 5,000 units of the Subaru XV 2.0i and Subaru XV 2.0i-Premium will be assembled at the TCMA Segambut for export to Indonesia and Thailand as well as sale in the country. According to Glenn Tan, Executive Director of Tan Chong International Ltd. and Motor Image's Chief, the 5,000 XVs will be allocated on a basis of a third of the total to each designated country. Tan also revealed that the Subaru CKD program cost approximately USD$30 million.

The Subaru XV is presented as an attractive, straightforward crossover SUV during its rollout. At the front end, the XV resembles its sibling the Subaru Forester closest with its sporty front bumper, a one-piece mesh style grille with a striking chrome fixture that lifts the Subaru emblem at the center and rounded fog light bezels. The side presents a forward-thrust silhouette thanks to a shorter B-pillar and sculpted C-pillar. Appropriate shoulder lines, roof rails, wrapped rear lights, larger tyres and wheels (225/55 R17) provide further distinctive motifs for the Subaru Crossover. From the rear, the XV takes up smaller rear combination lights, rear reflective panels at the bottom of the bumper and an obvious duck-tailed spoiler. The CKD XV utilizes some 40% local contents whereas 60% contents are based on import specifications.

Inside the XV fits five adults easy and comfortably with standard leather seats and several notable interior features. The telescopic steering wheel has convenient switches for the audio system and cruise control, while the paddle shifters come as few and far in between for an SUV Crossover. Highlights for the Center console include the DVD+iPod/USB/Bluetooth audio and navigation system with touch display and switches for the air-conditioning with anti-dust filter. Rear Seats carry 60/40 split folding for extra boot loads.

Powered by a 16-valve DOHC 4-cylinder 2.0 liter BOXER engine and Lineartronic CVT transmission powertrain, the XV manages 150hp at 6,200 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. The Crossover's chassis and suspension consist ventilated discs for the front and solid discs at the rear, and front MacPherson struts and rear double wishbones with stabilizer bar.

Safety features are imperative for the Subaru XV, the Crossover's unexhaustible list includes Anti-theft system immobilizer, 4-Sensor and 4-Channel ABS, Brake Assist, 2 airbags plus a knee airbag for the driver, Vehicle Dynamic system, ISOFIX, 3-point seatbelts for rear passengers, side-door reinforcement beams and Hill Start Assist.

On the first Subaru to roll out at TCMA, Tan commented, “This development is a significant milestone for us as the ability to locally assemble Subaru cars in Malaysia allows us to leverage inter-ASEAN trade agreements, giving us an advantage in our plans to widen our vehicle distribution network.”

“This initiative also shows our capabilities and versatility as an automotive powerhouse, both of which are strengthening our foothold in Asia,” he added.

Through 2013, Motor Image plans to open another 7 sales and distribution outlets in the country. By the end of next year, Subaru dealerships will add up to 23 dealerships.

The Subaru XV retails at a staring price of RM150,000 and is offered in five body colors: Pure White, Marine Blue, Obsidian Black, Dark Grey and Metallic Silver.
